UQ Sport says THANK YOU!

Six tonnes of mud and five hundred sausages later, facilities at UQ Sport have begun to reopen! The team at UQ Sport would like to publicly thank the many volunteers who came down and offered their assistance after the floods. Without their tireless work, a cleanup of such massive proportions would simply not have been possible.

As a result of this cleanup effort, we are pleased to announce that the UQ Sport & Fitness Centre, UQ Inter-Professional Clinics and UQ Staff Gym are all now open. We are also hoping to have a few of our tennis courts open for use by the start of Semester 1 (28 Feb).

As for the UQ Aquatic Centre and UQ Athletics Centre, structural engineers are currently in the process of assessing the damage sustained. We will be sure to let you know as soon as we have any information on these facilities. Playing fields and ovals will progressively reopen throughout February and March. Your patience and understanding during this rebuilding process is greatly appreciated.

UQ rowers thrown a lifeline

Thanks to the commitment of UQ Sport's Head Rowing Coach, Andy Cruickshank, 12 elite rowers have found temporary homes interstate after the UQ boatshed was damaged in the floods.

Six male UQ rowers, all Queensland representatives, have been given free access to the facilities at Sydney University Sport, as well as spots in the Sydney Uni Boat Club squad.

Meanwhile, three of our girls are training with former rowing champion and esteemed coach Ellen Randell at UTS and using the gym facilities at the Sydney Rowing Club. Two other UQ girls are receiving similar treatment at Melbourne University Boat Club. Finally, UQ Sport scholarship holder and Olympian Pippa Savage has been given a temporary home by the Victorian Institute of Sport.

Andy's success in making these arrangements for his rowers in such a short amount of time is a true testament to his passion for coaching and commitment to his athletes. Well done Andy.

Active Tribes delivers more smiles over summer

The Active Tribes Program  has once again delivered a hugely successful holiday program, despite the challenges provided by the appalling summer weather. More than 400 children took part in a range of activities, including tennis, soccer, basketball, fencing, capoeira, athletics, swimming, hockey and European handball. The number of participants is a credit to the staff who worked tirelessly to help run such a successful program. The Autumn Holiday Program begins on April 18 and is sure to be bigger and better than ever.
